Johnston, Route 2, Sayre, a Berlin Community farmer and rancher who died Friday September 15, 1972 in the Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck, following a short illness was conducted from the Martin Funeral Chapel in Elk City Sunday September 17, 1972 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. R.K. Whittaker of Shamrock, Texas and Tom Kent of Sayre officiating. He was born May 10, 1899 at Decatur, Texas, he was 73. Mr. Johnston came to western Oklahoma with his parents in 1902 and they settled in old Greer County, where his early life was spent. He was married to Nellie Berkley, May 20, 1921 at Delhi and they moved to the Berlin area in 1924, where he has lived since. He was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife of the Berlin Community home, a son John O. Johnston of Sayre; 3 sisters Mrs. Sallie Uptergrove of Carger, Mrs. Eva Mayer of Granite, and Mrs. Rosa Brumley of Oklahoma City, also a brother Thomas Johnston, of Shamrock, Texas and 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Johnston, a son Elwyn, a sister and 2 brothers and a grandson. Burial was in the Berlin Cemetery, Berlin, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under direction of the Martin Funeral Home of Elk City.
