"Van" and Mary Knight and went to be with the Lord on Februry 15, 2003 at the ae of 89 years and 15 days. The second of 6 children, Clois worked on the family farm as a child. He graduated from Gould High School. After graduation he wound up in Dallas, Texas with the sum total of $290 in his pocket and began working for Guce Cone Company making ice cream cones. On August 7, 1937 he married the love of his life, Mattie Bea Carpenter, and they lived a life of love and devotion to each other for 65 years. When World War II broke out in 1940 he helped the war effort by working in a defense plant. In 1943 he moved back to Russell to farm the family homestead. Clois was a man who truly loved his work. Whether he was plowing from early morning until late at night or reaping the rewards of his work at harvest time, Clois was truly happy being outside. There were years that the harvest was abundant and years that the weather took its toll, but either way, he was prosperous, not so much because of what he had, but because of his faith in a God who could supply all of his needs. On August 6, 1944 Clois accepted the Lord as his Savior. That was a relationship that lasted the remainder of his life and becam complete in the early hours of February 15, 2003 when Jesus reached down His hand to Clois and sia, "Its' time to come home." Clois was a faithful family man and took great care to make sure each member of his family knew about his love for the Lord. On April 28, 1954 their daughter Karla Ruth was born, Clois and Mattie Bea adopted her 6 days later. The apple of Clois' eyes were his two grandchildren, Tonya and Scott. He was privileged to see his two great grandchildren Coalton and Renee'. Clois was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Gould where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Hospital Board at Harmon County Memorial Hospital in Hollis for several years. Clois retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Mangum, where he and Mattie joined the First Baptist Church. He was a faithful member until failing health prevented him from attending church.
