He was raised in the home of his parents as the youngest of three children. He was very much a part of the life of the Tarrytown community-growing up and participating in the life of the Catholic Church. He attended both grade school and high wchool there and worked as a grovery up until the time he enlised in the U.S. Navy. He answered the call to serve his country in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theatre of War. He lost many shipmates and endured many heartbreaking experiences during World War II. He remained reluctant to talk about many of his wartime experiences until his later years when the deep friendships he had came back more in the form of pleasant memories. On August 19, 1942 Don and Sue Simmons were united in marriage at Oakland, California. Two daughters, Linda and Mary were born to this happy union. Following Dom's honorable discharge from the Navy, they established their home at Sue's hometown of Camargo, Oklahoma where Dom was employed by the MKT Railroad. They lived there until 1957, then moved to Ossining, New York where Dom worked as a mail carrier. In 1962 they moved back to Dom's hometown of Tarrytown, New York where he continued to serve as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. They returned to Camargo at their retirement in 1974 and lived there until Sue's passing in 1999. Both were active in the life of the community and the Christian Church during these final years of their lives. Dom's own failing health forced him to assume residence in the Leedey nursing Center shortly before Sue's death on September 19, 1999. He passed away while in the hospital on July 21, 2000. In addition to his beloved wife Sue, Dom was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Joseph Lofaro; and a sister Filomena Angela Elliot. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Lafaro of Camargo, and a daughter and son-in-law, Linda K. and Michael A. Coursey of Choctaw, Oklahoma; one granddaughter, Kimberlie S. Miller of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and a grandson, Christopher M. Coursey of Choctaw, Oklahoma. Dom is also survived by several nieces, a nephew, and other beloved relatives and many friends.
