The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ====================================================================== James Dale Liston, son of William and Zoe Liston, was born in Mahaska, Kansas on January 10, 1907. He passed from this life, Monday, December 14, 1987 in the Seiling Hospital, Seiling, Oklahoma at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 4 days. When Dale was but six weeks old, he came with his parents to Oklahoma Territory. They settled near Oakwood where Dale spent his early years. He received his Elementary education in the Oakgrove and Oakwood schools and was a graduate of Oakwood High School, a member of the Class of 1927. Through these years of his early life, he made a valian effort ot receive his deploma. His help was to badly needed on the farm, but he was determined to become a teacher, this he accomplished. On July 4, 1928, James Dale Liston and Lola Bartell were united in marriage at Taloga, Oklahoma. Three daughters and three sons were born to this union. Two little sons, Robert Keith and Clayton Eugene, died in infancy. The home was first established near Hucmac where Dale was engage in farming. Soon he obtained his teacher's certificate and taught in various rural schools including Lenora and Union, then began working towards his College Degree at Northwestern State Teacher's College, Alva. He received his batchelor's Degree in 1948 and while continuing his teaching, he began working towards his Master's. This advanced Degree work at Phillips University in Education in 1953. Following a few more years in the Educational field, Mr. Liston was elected County School Superintendant of Dewey County. Then agein the school room called and he was employed in various school systems over the State including Mooreland, Grant, Dale and Vici. Following his reitrment, he and his wife established their home in Vici in 1975, where they spent their remaining years. During his boyhood days, Dale made his commitment of Faith in Christ and became a member of the Oakwood Christian Church. He later re-dedicated his life while attending the Camp Creek Church of the Nazarene and although he attended various churches over the years, his membership has remained in the Oakwood Christian Church. The Oakwood Church recently observed their 80th anniversary and Mr. Liston received special recognition as being one of the oldest living members who was baptized in the Oakwood Church. Mr. Liston served as a member of the Vici Town Board, the Dewey County Law Enforcement inter-local board and on the New Horixons Board. He was a member of Oklahoma Education Association, the O.R.T.A., Oklahoma High School Rodeo Association, and served as local Chairman of Red Cross and Heart Fund Drives. His interests were centered in his children, his grandchildren and he also enjoyed traveling, sports events, his cattle and ranching interests and was also fasinated and challenged by Cross-Word Puzzles. He was a kind, loving husband, father and grandfather and a true friend whose life has reached out and touched the lives of many people. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Zoe Liston, his wife, Lois Liston, their two infant sons, one sister, Helen Roberts, and one brother, Bob Liston. He is survived by three daughters, Wilma Nutter of Alva, LaVaughn Cummins of Waynoka and Sandra Gilreath of Watonga, one son, Dale Liston, Jr. of Taloga, 17 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, other loved ones and many friends. Services for Dale Liston, Sr. were held Friday, December 18, 1987 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Christian Church of Vici, Oklahoma with Kevin Hookstra and J.C. Neal officiating. Interment followed in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Vici, Oklahoma under the direction of Shaw Funeral Home. Casket bearers were: Emmett Buck, Doug Herring, George Turner, Don Peoples, Rex Spake and Gordon Young. Honorary Bearers were: Max Barney, M.N. Cole, Leonard Duer and Paul Humberd.
