Lancaster, pioneer of Roger Mills county and first postmaster at Grimes, were held Monday afternoon at Black Fork, Ark., Saturday night February 29, 1936. The former pioneer resident of Roger Mills county was born on May 30, 1851, in Illinois. He moved to the Grimes community in 1900 to file on a claim and when the post office was established there in 1901, he was named postmaster. He moved from the Grimes community in 1908 and lived near Sayre until 1913, when he moved to Arkansas. He is survived by his widow and 10 children. His son, Rev. S.F. Lancaster of Dempsey, in Roger Mills county and two daughters. Mrs. Dollie Wilson and Mrs. Roy Gartison, accompanied by a granddaughter, Mrs. Virgil Poor of Grimes, attended the funeral. The Sayre Daily Headlight Journal, Sayre, OK 5-Mar-1936 ========= John Gernade Lancaster was born May 31, 1852 in Browning, Ill., and departed this life in Blackford, Ark., at midnight February 29, 1936 at the age of 83 years and nine months. He homesteaded in Grimes, Oklahoma, in the fall of 1900. He was the first postmaster and general merchant as well as Sunday school superintendent and classs leader. He sold out to E.S. Repass in 1908 and moved to a farm near Sayre where the family resided until 1913 when they moved to Scott, Ark., near Blackfork where death came. He was converted in early life and a member of the Methodist Espiscopal church. Mr. Lancaster was united in marriage to Callie Sherill of Browning, Ill., in 1876. Eleven children were born to this union, three sons and eight daughters. One daughter died in infancy, Winifred. The other are: Paul Lancaster, Low Point, Ill., Franch Lancaster, Grimes, DeWitt Lancaster, Mena, Ark., Mrs. Kate Hareiz, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Lixa Wright, Litchfirle, Neb., Mrs. Virdie Garrison, Grimes, Miss Salonia Lancaster, Oklahoma City, Mrs. Leona Wilson, Merritt, Mrs. Gertrude Rainwater, Talihinia, Mrs. Ethllin Spaks, Wilson. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs Callie Lancaster, his children, 56 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and a host of friends who respect the memory of this good man. He was laid to rest in the beautiful little cemetery at Dempsey with Reverend Settlers of Elk City officiating and Gilberts funeral home in charge.
