He attended school at Rankin and graduated high school at Reydon, Oklahoma. He earned a bachelor's degree from Central State College (now University of Central Oklahoma) and a master's degree from Peabody University. After a stint in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma and Vanderbilt University, eventually accepting a position at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. With the advent post-industrial development in Mexico, Gene recognized the demand for bilingual workers, and he established three English language academies in Mexico City, as well as other locations in Mexico. Eventually he wrote several text books which are used throughout Mexico and other countries of Latin America and Europe. After a long career, Gene retired to the city of Acapulco in the State of Guerrero, Mexico, where he died on July 25, 2010. Gene Long is survived by sisters, Katie Long Yowell of Phoenix, Ruth Long Harrison of California, Mary Long Duke of Aztec, New Mexico, and Velma Long Payne of Edmond, Oklahoma; and one brother Wayne Long of Oklahoma City. Many in Roger Mills County will remember his mother, Flora Long, who worked at the Reydon School Cafeteria for several years, and who made her way alone by train from Reydon to Mexico City to visit Gene, about 50 years ago at a time when international travel was not a common thing for women in the 70's. Gene will be long remembered for his work in education and his gift of language.
