Etta Lawson McFarland, daughter of John J. and Mary Elizabeth Wolfe Lawson, 
was born in Sneedville, Hancock County, Tennessee on December 22, 1894.  She 
departed this life in Leedey, Oklahoma after having attained 102 years, 8 
months and 19 days of age.

In January of 1906 Etta made a journey with her family to their new home in 
Oklahoma.  After a five day trip they arrived by train in Elk City, 
Oklahoma.  They were met by friends who had arrived before them and who 
carried them by horse and buggy to their new home in Hammon, Oklahoma.  Etta 
attended school in Hammon and continued her education in Normal School 
eventually attaining her teaching credentials.  Before she had an 
opportunity to teach, however, she met Estey E. McFarland and they were 
married in 1915.  Five children, all of whom survive, were born to this 
happy union.

Etta and Estey established their home in Leedey, Oklahoma in 1925 and Estey 
operated the Ford agency there for many years.  During their life together 
in Leedey, Etta Lovingly accepted the responsibility for the well being of 
her children, her husband and her community.  She had been baptized into the 
Baptist Church at Hammon in 1910.  After moving to Leedey she transferred 
her membership there, where it has since remained.  The Christian education 
of her children was of utmost importance to her and her early instruction 
did much toward grounding her sons and daughters in the faith that they 
adhere to today. Though her family was her primary source of enjoyment, she 
also enjoyed gardening and collection beautiful rocks.

Etta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Estey, by her parents, by 
her two brothers, Milum and William and by her five sisters, Mindy, 
Catherine, Ida Mary and Martha.  She is survived by two sons and their 
wives, Richard and Kathryn McFarland and Harry and Betty McFarland, and by 
her three daughters and their husband, Helen and A.V. Brewer, Marjorie and 
I.J. Ward and Doris Jean and Richard Anderson.  She is survived by a number 
of grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

Etta slipped away quietly, in her sleep on September 11, 1997.
