His funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 3rd in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South. Burial will be in the Garden of Hope in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday at Elmwood Funeral Home. Jay was born on February 25, 1914 in Hamilton County the son of George Washington Massingill and Ollie Lemley Massingill. His father died when he was 5 years old and after his mother's marriage to farmer A.T. Nicks, the family moved to Scurry County, Texas where Jay spent a good part of his life before moving to Abilene 21 years ago. Jay was always a farmer at heart, but expermiented with many different careers throughout his life. He was proud of holding several positions in Scurry county including Deputy Sheriff, a term as County Commissioner and finally 17 years as Scurry County Auditor. He had been a member and elder of the Eastside Church of Christ in Snyder, and wasd a member of HOPE Church of Christ in Abilene. Since retiring and moving to Abilene, Jay enjoyed putting his thoughts and humor in print as a guest columnist in the Abilene Report News and also by creating his own website www.massingill.org where he tells his life story displaying pictures of family and shows off some of his poetry. Even at the age of 96, he strived daily to learn new things and especially enjoyed his time on the computer. He was a former member the Key City Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Allene Sutton Massingill of Abilene; his children, Linda Beason and husband Dannie of Hammon, Oklahoma, Gary Massingill of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Kim "K.B." Massingill and wife Laura of Abilene, 8 grandchildren, Richard Beason, Kerry Beason, Shelly Flick, Laura Hawkins, Joshua, Jessalyn, Nina Marie and Zachary Massingill; 6 great grandchildren and 1 great great granchild.
