Her family moved from Winston Salem to Durham, Oklahoma where they homesteaded. She is a graduate of West Texas University at Canyon, Texas. She began her teaching career at the Washita School, South of Canadian in Hemphill County, Texas. The majority of her teaching career was in Pampa, Texas where she taught first grade until she retired. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Pampa where she served on the board and was a Sunday School Teacher. In 1979 she moved to Waco, Texas and was a resident of Stillwell, Texas Retired Teachers Residence until her death. She continued her involvement in church activities as an active member of the Central Christian Church, Waco. Lifetime member of the Texas State Teachers Association. Member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Preceded in death by her father Charles Andrew Spaugh, mother Emma Aplha Sides Spaugh, sisters, Nettie J. Shaw and Mable R. Cain, and brother Clyde Spaugh. She is survived by brothers Wilbur J. Spaugh of Los Angeles, Californ ia; Orville J. Spaugh of San Diego, California, nephews Weldon a. Cain of oklahoma City, Oklahoma; James H. Spaugh of El Sobrangte; and nieces Patricia L. McDermott, Margaret Ann Spaugh of Berkeley, California; and Margaret Censor of San Diego, California. The funeral was held at the Central Christian Church in Waco at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 1991 with Pastor Tommy Potter officiating. The burial was at Elk City, Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m. January 18, 1991 with Martin Funeral Home. While Pearl did not marry and have children of her own, she will be remember for her keen understanding of all of the children she came in contact with during her teaching career.
