Saffer, pioneer of Durham, Oklahoma, was born in Fulton County, Illinois, March 9, 18862, and passed away at Musick hospital, Elk City, Oklahoma, Januazry 22, 1944. Funeral services were held at Durham high school auditorium January 23, 1944 conducted by Arthur Kiez, Shattuck. Scripture reading was taken from the 23rd Psalm. In early childhood he moved to Harrison County, Missouri, with his parents James R. Saffer, a Baptist minister, and his mother, Louisa Saffer. He was married to Lizzie Burris May 10, 1891. Seven years later he came with his wife to Grant County, Oklahoma, later coming to Western Oklahoma. In 1900 he homesteaded two miles east of Durham, where he lived continously until his death. There are left to mourn his going his wife, two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Susie Clark and Charles Saffer of Bethany, Missour and Mrs. Mollie Miller of McFall, Missouri. Other relatives and friends will miss his cfherry heelo. He was a member of the Seven day Adventist church. His favorite Scripture was 2nd Timothy, 4:7: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith, henceforth there is a crown of righteousness laid up for me", which he repated so often. He was a good Bible student, resolving the first New Year's after his marriage to read the Bible every day, which he did until his eyesight failedd so much. Even when he was in the hospital he would ask for a Biblew to read. He lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary May 10, 1941. He was laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery, Durham, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma near his old homestead. So ends a long and useful life.
