He died Friday in Clinton at the age of 74. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Sayre First Baptist Church officiated by Tom Cooksey and Ray Smart. Interment will be in the Sayre-Doxey Cemetery, Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. John grew up in Sayre and attended Sayre Schools. He was drafter his senior year into the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. John was wounded twice during his tour of duty and received two Purple Heart decorations. After his discharge, he returned to western Oklahoma and received his High School Diploma from Merritt School before attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. He later moved to Wewoka before returning to Sayre and he worked for Garrett-Carpenter Furniture Store beofre carrying a rural mail route and retired from the Postal Service in 1978. He was married to Cleta Smith on July 1, 1978 and they continued to make their home in Sayre. He was a member of Sayre First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Clifton L. Sides, Densil E. Sides, J.R. Sides and Hershel Sides, two granddaughters, Jacklyn R. Sides and Rachel. John is survived by his wife, Cleta of the home; five sons, Dale Sides and wife Barbara of Waynoka, Mike Sides, Jerry Sides both of Oklahoma City, Larry Sides and wife, Joyce, Donnie Smith and wife, Joyce, Donnie Smith and wife, Tamra all of Sayre; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Corda Sides of Okemah; and a host of other relatives and friends.
