Steele, 92, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, in McLean. Memorial graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery with John Curry officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Steele was born Oct. 17, 1911, in Roger Mills County, Okla., near Elk City where he was a graduate of Elk City High School. He received his bachelor's of art and master's of art degrees in history from the University of Oklahoma. He married Margaret Irby Eikner on Dec. 25, 1936, in Altus, Okla. Mr. Steele came to Pampa in 1938 and was a history teacher and assistant principal at Pampa High School from 1938 to 1946. In 1946, he became manager of Security Federal Savings and Loan Association. He later served as president of Security Federal until his retirement in 1982. He represented Security Federal and Pampa as a director of the Texas Savings and Loan League, and from 1967 to 1970, he was a director and vice-chairman of the board of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Little Rock, Ark. He was a former president of the Pampa Chamber of Commerce and a former trustee and board president of the Pampa Independent School District Board of Trustees. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a former member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard Steele and wife, Jane, of Pampa; a daughter, Linda Steele Perry of Castroville; and four grandchildren, Richard Joshua Steele and Melissa Lomax and husband, Kirk, all of San Antonio, Ellen Wedemeyer and husband, Drew, of Fort Worth and Matt Perry and wife, Christa, of Pampa. The family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1981, Pampa, TX 79066-1981 or to Pampa Learning Center Scholarship Fund, 400 N. Faulkner, Pampa, TX 79065.
