John, the son of John W. and Jennie Smith, married Kathleen Chastain on December 4, 1931 in Quentin, Oklahoma and later graduated from Quentin High School in 1932 before attending Southeastern College in Durant where he received his Bachelor's Degree in 1947. He then taught in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. On March 1, 1954 he married Editha Burnice Jackson in Dallas, Texas and continued his education at the University of Oklahoma in Norman where he received his Masters Degree in 1959. John taught school and was superintendent at Crawford and Durham, Oklahoma. In 1971 he retired and moved to Sayre to make his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 1 son, 1 infant daughter, 2 brothers, and 3 sisters. He is survived by 1 daughter, Genave Allen of Amarillo, Texas 2 sons, William E. "Bill" Smith of Amarillo, Texas and James M. "Jim" Smith of Plano, Texas; 2 sisters, Jimmie Hardy of Richmond, California and Oval Baird of Talent, Oregon; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held Sunday January 20, 1991 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sayre First Baptist Church with M.H. Childes, Lynn Heard and Tom Cooksey officiating. Burial was in the Sayre-Doxey Cemetery, Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service of Sayre. Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, OK
