Mrs. Shewmaker died June 14, 2007 at her home. She was 91. Burial will be at the Poarch Cemetery in Washita County under the direction of Martin Funeral Home in Elk City. Mrs. Shewmaker was born on January 3, 1916 in Carter, Oklahoma, to Eugene and Sarah (Arpha) Wilson. She was the oldest of three children; her two brothers were Mose and Woodrow. During a family trip to Arkansas when she was four, Buena met her future husband, Aubrey Daniel (A.D.) Shewmaker, who was then six. She didn't even see him again for twelve years, but this time, he determined he would marry her. He followed her back to Oklahoma where he lived with her family while the two finished high school. Mrs. Shewmaker graduated from Highway High School in 1934 and then attended Southwestern Oklahoma Teacher College in Weatherford. While in college, she married A.D. Shewmaker on December 30, 1935, in Sayre, Oklahomsa. He died in 2002 after 68 years of marriage. In 1937, Mrs. Shewmaker began her 30 year teaching career by teaching first through fourth grades in a two-room school house in Carpenter. In later years she taught at Retrop, Cold Springs, Mayfield, Butler, and Canute (1946-1970). Although she dropped out of college to work, education was a priority for Mrs. Shewmaker. She returned to school and graduated from Southwestern in Weatherford in 1952. In 1940, the Shewmakers boughtg a farm near Hammon, from Buena's parents and began farming. Over the years, they raised wheat, cotton, dairy cows and beef cattle. After retiring from teaching in 1970, they continued ranching full-time until their deaths. Mrs. Shewmaker was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, and in recent years she attended Second and Adams Church in Elk City. Mrs. Shewmaker kept up with hundreds of her past classmates and students and was in regular attendance at her Highway High School reunion. She is survived by two daughters, Allene Bottom of Hammon, and Earlene Callan and her husband Jim of Winnsboro, Texas, eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Grandchildren are Earl Bottom of Hammon, Oklahoma; Paula Stafford of Edmond, Oklahoma; Allen Bottom of Mansfield, Texas; Jo Ann Reynolds of Walker, LA; Diane Frook of Lawrence, KS; Jamie Callan of Pittsburg, PA; Kelly Callan of Malibu, CA; and Kristi Callan of Sherman Oaks, CA.
