Steere, Jr. 84 years old Woodward resident, died Friday December 11, 2009 in the Integris Baptist Medical Cednter in Oklahoma City. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the Billings Funeral Home Chapel in Woodward with the Reverand Timothy Hemmstra officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. Thomas H. Steere Jr., known as Tommy to his family and friends as he grew up in Cheyenne, Oklahoma; he was the oldest son born October 4, 1925 to Thomas Harold and Sallie (Trammell) Steere, who are now deceased. Tommy's family was very supportive and close. He is surivived by his friend and close companion of many years, Norman Solbrack of Woodward, an older sister, Juretta B. (Steere) Drake of Oklahoma City; two younger brothers and their wives, Billy C. Steere and Elaine of Overton, Texas and Bobby F. Steere and Loretta of Joplin, Missouri; plus a number of wonderful, loving nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Tommyt worked at the Conoco Service Station at Cheyenne, evenings after school hours and on weekends and during the summer months and then drove a Conoco delivery truck, delivering petroleum products to farms and ranches and service stations throughout Roger Mills County. When Tommy turned 18 on October 4, 1943 and still in high school, he received his notice that he was being drafted in to the U.S. Army. By November 23, 1943 he had received a physical exam in Oklkahoma City and was sworn into the U.S. Army. He was processed at Fort Sill and then moved to Camp Fannin, Texas near Tyler, Texas for basic training. From there Tom was moved to Camp Miles Standish, Massachusetts to be put aboard a ship for movement to the European Theater of operations as a replacement. A sergent came out and told them if their name was called to return to the barracks. They were later told that President Roosevelt had just signed into law a Bill prohibiting 18 year olds from being sent to combat. He was then made a part of the 89th Infantry Division at Camp Butner, North Carolina and then served in France, Luxembourg and Germany. His division, (The 89th Infantry) was the first to liberate a Nazi Labor Camp at Ohrdurf near the Czechoslovakian border. He had many memories to share of the tragic time. Upon his honorable dischasrge from the Army on March 1, 1945, "Tom " as he was then known during his service and to all his friends he had made throughout the years outside of Cheyenne, worked at the Cheyenne Postoffice. Her had earned his Eagle Scout Badge while growing up in Cheyenne, and upon his return after his discharge from the Army, he, with a dear friend, Marshall Jackson, led the Boy Scout Troop at Cheyenne. Whiled living back in Cheyenne, he earned the title of Past Master of the Cheyenne Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Cheyenne Kiwanis Club. In 1963 Tom was assigned to Post Office at Wichita, Kansas. In 1967 he moved to Oklahoma City to begin working for Conoco as a District Marketing Supervisor. Not long aftewards, he moved to Woodward to serve as the Conoco Marketing Supervisor, for that territory. He made many friends across that area, in the work he greatly enjoyed. After his retirement from Conoco in 1978, he worked at Montgomery Wards as the Automotive Manager. He continued to live in Woodward until his death. His family and friends remember Tom as a very kind and caring person who was always a pleasure to visit with.
