George Stephens of Near Grimes Accidentally Shoots Self With Sawed- Off Shotgun HUNTING RABBITS FOR HOGS Just How Accident Occurred Is Unknown--Discharge entered Stomach Ranging Upward George Stephens and a neighbor by the name of Edwards and a small boy were hunting rabbits last Thursday afternoon for Mr. Stephens' hogs when Stephens let his gun discharge in some manner and the full contents entered the pit of his stomach and ranged up then lodging in his liver and intestings producing almost instant death. The fact that the shot ranged upward is evidence that Mr. Stephens was in an upright position when the gun was discharged. It is difficult to arrive at a logical conclusion as to just how the gun was discharged in order for the shot to go in the direction that they went. The shotgun was a short gun, the barrel having been sawed off, and of the hammer variety. From the evidence of Mr. Edwards at the coroner's inquest held Thursday evening. Mr. Stephens had gone through a shinnery thicket in search of rabbits, while he Edwards was off a short distance, and on the opposite side of the thicket. A report of Mr. Stephen's gun was heard and also a cry from Stephens. He ran to where Mr. Stephens was and found him in a crumpled up position. He soon fell to the ground and expired withing a few minutes. A coroner's inquest was conducted by Justice of the Peace Turner, County Attorney Peterson and the undersheriff Clarence Trammell and all available evidence was established the corner's jury returned a verdict "That George Stephens came to his death from the accidental dicharge of a shotgun in his owns hands." County Attorney Peterson stated that he was satisfied with the evidence and assured that an accidental cause and that he saw no necessity of an autopsy. However, the wife of the deceased requested that an autopsy be held and a doctor from Sweetwater proceeded to hold same which revealed that the shot from the gun ranged almost directly upward finding lodgment in the intestines and liver.
