Col. John F. Stone and William Cater were traveling horseback across country and upon passing a shock of corn they were fired on. Col. Stone received a full load of buckshot in the chest and face killing him instantly. Cater realized his dangerous position put in full speed and soon carried himself out of the reach of the would be assassin. After Stone was killed, the assassin robbed him body of $25, Masonic pin, some keys, his gold watch, valuable papers and overcoat. Evidence points to James Walcher as the assassin as he has been arrested and placed in the Guthrie jail. It appears that Walcher had mortgaged the same property twice, once to Stone and once to Capitol National Bank of Guthrie. It is believed the killing was a result of this business deal.
