Dennis lost his life in an accident on the seas, July 17, 1963, while serving with the navy. Immediate survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Trammell of Cheyenne and three sisters; Mrs. Betty Bentley and Linda Trammell of Cheyenne and Mrs. Mary lou Beatty of Memphis, Tennessee. Young Trammel lacked a few days being 21 years of age. He enlisted in the Navy, August 26, 1960. He had served on the Bennington since February, 1961. He was a member of the 2nd Division which is one of the deck divisions of the Gunnery Department. According to information received by his parents from Capt. Charles E. Healy, Commanding officer of the Bennington, Dennis met his death in the following manner: He was standing watch on the faintail of the ship during an Air Operaation. it was his job to keep close watch on the water area within his vision to keep in sight any planes that might have craashed or any buoys in case of a doomed pilot. A shipmate was close at hand and saw Dennis fall into the water at approximately 9 p.m. Since it was a very dark night the exact details as to how he fell have not yet been determined. Instantly the alarm was sounded and all hands on the Bennington plus the two destroyers did everything possible to find the lost crew member. The search continued all night. With the first light of day helicopters joined the search, bu the extensive search failed to locate any trace of Dennis. A marker was place in the Cheyenne cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, Ok
