Thurmond, Jr, was born in Elk City, Oklahoma, on March 7, 1912, the son of A.L. and Martha Hunt Thurman. He died January 11, 1989 in Oklahoma City, following a lengthy illness. A.L. graduated from Classen High School in 1929 and attended the University of Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army during Wordl War II. Mr. Thurmond served as President and Chariman of the First National Banks of Elk City and Leedey until his retirement in 1974. He also operated banks in Foss and Burns Flatuntil the early 1960's and operated a cattle ranch southwest of Cheyenne. Mr. Thurmond's father and uncles were early settlersd of western Oklahoma and founded some 14 banks in the region. A resident for most of his life of Elk City, Mr. Thurmond had lived in Oklahoma City since 1968. A.L. was preceded in death by his parents; his older sister, Flora: and his first wife, Dorothea Jean. He is survived by his wife of twenty years, Ruth Anne; his sister, Gail Putman of Phoenix, Arizona; five children, Leslie T. Farha of Denton, Texas, Linda L. Patzkowsky of oklahoma City, Gail Ann Tate of Dallas, Texas, Arthur L. Thurmond, III of Dallas, Texas and J. Peter Thurmond of Leedey, Oklahoma and seven grandchildren. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday January 13, 1989 at Hahn Cook Chapel, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, interment following at Memorial Park Cemetery.
