Melvin attended school at Midway and graduated from Reydon High School, Reydon, Oklahoma in 1946. He graduated from Panhandle State University, Goodwell, Oklahoma in 1950. He was in the Aggie Club and the Roughneck Club while there. He married Virgie Aliene Tidrick on January 21, 1951. He entered into the US Army in 1951 also. He was trained in Anti-Aircraft Artillery in preparation for serving his country in Korea. Melvin was honorably discharged in 1953. Melvin and Virginia moved to Garden City, Kansas where they worked on a ranch. Melvin continued to farm until his death on February 13, 1998. He was looked to for guidance by many young farmers of the community. He was known for being very knowlegeable on many different subjects. He is survived and missed by his wife Virgie of the home; 2 daughters, Melvena and her husband John Hedisch of Oklahoma City and Charlotte and her husband Johnny Nance of Enid; 1 son Harold and his wife Marika of Topeka; 6 grandchildren: Derek, Amanda, Camille and Vanessa of Topeka, Kansas; Laura Marie and John of Enid, Oklahoma, 1 brother, Merle B. Thurman of Aztec, New Mexico and his wife Jean; his mother-in-law, Marie Ticrick of Reydon, and many other relatives and friends.
