Unger, 82, died December 8, 2009, in Amarillo, Texas. Services were held Thursday, December 10 in Llano Mausoleum Chapel with Dr. Murray Gossett of First Presyterian Church officiating. Burial was in the Llano Cemetery. Condolences may be made at www.mem.com. "J.L." was born February 7, 1927, in Sweetwater to Henry and Mildred Unger. He married Martha "Irene" Smith in 1944 in Elk City. He served in the U.S. Army as Staff Seargeant during WWII, where he received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Army Occupation Ribbon and the Overseas Bar. He received a batchelor's degree from SWOSU, a Master's of Education from WTSA and a Drivers Education Certification from Texas Tech. He was an elementary prinicpal, teacher and girls basketball coach in Butler, librarian and high school English teacher in Sudan, physical education and gymnastics teacher at Forerst Hill Elementary and administrive assistant, science and math teacher at Will Rogers Elementary, both in Amarillo, before retiring in 1985. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo since 1954. Memberships include Lions Club, Phi Delta Kappa, WAGGS travel club-president, Thoroughbred RV local chapter NCHA, Family Motor Coach Association, Good Sam RV, National Education Assn., Retired Teachers Assn., Texas State Teachers Assn., Amarillo Retired Teachers Assn., and Kitawa Service Organization. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-sister, Marilyn; Surivivors include his wife, Martha "Irene" Unger; his son, Lewis Unger, and wife, Irene D.; a granddaughter, Michele Papp and husband, Joseph; a great-granddaughtere, Gabriel "Gabby" Pappy' three half sisters and families in the Oklahoma City area; a brother-in-law; Clarence Smith; and nephews, Jimmy and Eddie Smith and families.
