According to Mike Sherman, investigating officer of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, John Paul Weaver, Jr., age 5 of Cheyenne, was killed when Trevor Fletcher, age 27, of the Republic of South Africa, was drivinghis 1987 Oldsmobile on the opposite side of the road-due to habit. John Weaver, Sr., age 38 of Cheyenne, took evasive action upon seeing the oncoming car and ran his 1985 Dodge, off the road, ejecting the young boy from the vehicle and into the path of the other car, where he was struck by Fletcher. Fletcher was uninjured. John Sr. was treated and released. Joe Andrew Weaver, age 2, was also involved in the wreck but was uninjuried. John Jr was pronounced dead on arrival at the Elk City Community Hospital of head and internjal injuries. Seatbelts were in use in the Fletcher vehicle. Funeral services for John Paul Weaver, Jr. were conducted from the First Church of the Nazarene, Monday, April 27, 1987 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Charles Strout, Rev. Milton Gage and Rev. Leland Watkins officiating. Graveside services followed at 4:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Cemetery, Carnegie, Oklahoma under the direction of Martin Funeral Home. John was born in Shawnee, May 21, 1981, where he lived until 1984 when the family moved to Cheyenne, Oklahoma where he had lived since. He was fatally injured in an automobile accident Firday afternoon April 25, 1987 at the age of 5. He is survived by his parents, John and Kay Weaver of Cheyenne, Oklahoma; one brother, Joe Weaver; his paternal grandparents, Jim and Rhama Weaver of Carnegie; six aunts, Jayne Lee of Duncan, Jeanne Bogle of Alva, Joyce Harthun of Snyder, Elaine Welch of Hobart and Jan Sullins of Cleburne, Texas; four uncles, Jim Weaver, Jr. of Duncan, Joe Weaver of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Cecil Perkins of Weatherford and Nelson Perkins of Farmington, New Mexico; several cousins and other relatives.
