OCNS - May 3, 2001 - Services for George Cochrun, Sr., 91, were held May 3, 2001, at the Chapel of the Garden, Rice Funeral Service in Claremore, Oklahoma, with burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Mr. Cochrun was born June 29, 1909, at Alluwe, Oklahoma, the son of George Franklin and Jenny Celesta Shirley Cochrun and grew up and was educated in the rural Claremore community of Bushyhead -- attending Sequoyah Schools in the lower grades and then completing his high school years at Foyil, Oklahoma. December 10, 1930, George and Esmon S. Davis were married in a Claremore ceremony and made their home in the Sequoyah community all through their lives together until Mrs. Cochrun passed away in February of 1977. Being one who enjoyed the satisfaction of a job well done, he began to work and work he did! For more than fifty-three years, Mr. Cochrun was with the Sequoyah School System, working the custodial and maintenance departments and the bus barn. As a matter of fact, there was little that George didn't do around the school and if anyone else needed help, he was there to lend a helping hand. Retirement came in 1989, only after the Cochrun children insisted on it. But, with work being just about his favorite thing to do, this was a very hard decision to make. Even after leaving the school, his heart actually remained there throughout the years to come and the many friends he made there remained close. With the many years George was at the Sequoyah School, there was no doubt that he had a heart for young people and they for him. It might have been his easy going nature that made it natural for him to make friends of the children, but it seemed to work equally well for everyone he knew. And it was that same quiet and gentle nature that kept George at peace with everyone. He never had an unkind or off-color word for anyone in all his life. He enjoyed work so much that he even volunteered his spare time for helping out. this was just the type of man George Cochrun was. On Sunday, April 29, 2001, George Shirley Cochrun, Sr., passed away in Claremore and will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include three children: George S. Cochrun, Jr., and his wife, Jean of Claremore; Betty Casey of Hot Springs, Arkansas; David D. Cochrun and his wife, Jeannie of Bakersfield, California; twelve grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren and a host of friends. In addition to his wife, George was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, three grandsons and three great great grandchildren. *********************************************************************** Copyright c 2002 Joan Brazee.
