Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service, Claremore. Visitation will be at the funeral home until 8 p.m. Wednesday. Viewing will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Hortense died Sunday, March 24 at the Claremore Nursing Home. She was 100 years old. The daughter of Aden Andrew and Alice Williams Silvius, Mary Hortense Silvius was born Dec. 7, 1901, outside of Turney, Mo. Hortense attended Stephens College and Missouri University in Columbia and summer school at Missouri Wesleyan College in Cameron, Mo. She taught for two years at Turney, Mo. She married Clinton Gall on July 22, 1926 in her family home. Hortense and Clinton farmed near Turney, Mo., for several years before moving to Falls City, Neb., and then to Oklahoma City in 1944. While in Nebraska, in addition to her office work, Hortense reported oil news for Richardson County, Neb., for the Omaha World Herald. Hortense accepted Christ at the age of 16 in Turney, Mo. In Oklahoma City, she was a member of First Baptist Church, St. Luke's Methodist Church and Lakeside United Methodist Church. She has lived a full life, pursuing many interests such as painting, traveling, music, gardening and writing. For several semesters, she volunteered to teach oil painting in Continuing Education classes at St. Luke's. In 1987, she compiled a book of her years, titled "Scribblings," about different events and people in her life. She also wrote a book about her husband, Clinton Gall, and had been preparing a second volume. Hortense was a member of the Mr. and Mrs. Garden Club, Semper Idem Club, DAR, Zirkle Family Historical Association, Oklahoma City Bridge Club, Art League and others. After visiting her daughter Mary Alice in Honolulu for about six months, she had lived in Claremore for the past six years to be closer to her daughter, Jeanette. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clinton; brothers, George Andrew Silvius and Aden Beatty Silvius; grandchildren, Robert Monroe Caywood Jr. and Alfred "Al" Alexander Webster; and sons-in-law, Robert Monroe Caywood and John Farmer. Survivors include her daughters, Mary Alice Caywood of Honolulu, Hawaii and Jeanette Webster and husband Arthur of Claremore; grandchildren, John Clinton Caywood and wife Linda of San Jose, Calif., Charles Richard Caywood of Honolulu, Hawaii, Clinton Arthur Webster and wife Lisa of Crowley, Texas and Andrew Harry Webster and wife Karin of Claremore; and eight great-grandchildren.
