Burial will follow at Ketchum Cemetery. Friends may visit from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Carl passed away on Monday, March 3, 2003. He was 63. Born on Feb. 6, 1940 in Oklahoma City to Charles and Madge Spears Heltzel, Carl was reared and educated in Pryor from the age of 2. He entered the military, serving for 20 years. Carl was blessed with three lovely daughters. And for each, from their birth throughout their adulthood, he was there for his girls. Following his honorable discharge, Carl returned to Pryor and built a log home, almost entirely by hand, next door to his childhood home. Beginning his first career at an early age, he had time for a second. After working for several years for Moorman's Feed Company, he retired from there as well. Twice retired, Carl now found time for some of his favorite things. A gifted woodworker, he enjoyed that craft a great deal in his spare time. He also loved the hobby of cycling and one of his proudest achievements was surviving - at the age of 62 - the Texas "Hotter Than Hell 100," a ride spanning 100 miles of possibly 100 degrees. Another of his cycling accomplishments was a Free Wheel 400-mile ride across Oklahoma, which he completed two years in a row. Some of his less-exhaustive pastimes included weekend trips in his R.V. Most of the past winter was spent in Texas. But probably the highlight of his life were his adored grandchildren. And that adoration was reciprocated by all nine of them who equally treasured their "Papa." Carl is survived by his children, Laurel Matthews and her husband, Dan of White Heath, Ill., Linda Balmer of Claremore and Cinda Horner and her husband, Joe, also of Claremore; grandchildren, Luke, Jimmie and Michelle, all of White Heath and Candice, Celeste, Ashlee, Shelby, Cole and Mallory, all of Claremore; fiancee Wendy Lewis; sisters, Delma Mongold of West Virginia, Evelyn Brewer of Texas and Kathryn Hutchenson of Chelsea. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Madge and his brother, Henry. ************************************************************************* Transcribed from the Claremore Progess Newspaper, we sincerely thank them for allowing us to post these obits on the Rogers Co., OK USGenwebpages http://www.claremoreprogress.com/ copyright c 2002-2003, by webmaster Rogers Co.
