Kirkland was born in the state of Alabama, February 23, 1845. Moved to Texas in early life, and from Texas to the Chickasaw Nation twelve years ago; embraced religion and joined the M. E. Church, South, under the ministry of Rev. J. C. Powell about ten years ago. Brother Kirkland lived a consistent Christian life from the date of his conversion until about 5 a.m. February 28th, when the Master said it is enough, come up higher He was sick only about two days and was unconscious the greater portion of that time; hence, he left no dying testimony, but his life was 'a living epistle known and read of all men' with whom he had to do. He was class leader of the Florence class for several years, and a faithful Sunday School superintendent for the past two years. Brother Kirkland was a man of very limited education, yet possessed of a strong mind and deep piety. He had clear views of the teachings of God's holy word; he not only knew the word but knew its meaning. He leaves a wife and a large family of children and many relatives to mourn the loss of a kind husband, a devoted father, and a consistent Christian. The church and the community at large recognized that they have lost a leader whose place will be hard to fill. His funeral was preached by the writer at 2 o'clock p.m. yesterday to a vast concourse of people who gathered at the grave yard. Brother Kirkland was a poor man, a carpenter by trade, and had put in the winter building houses. His pilgrimage is over, his journey ended, his work is done, he's gone to live in the 'house not made with hands.' C F Roberts (NOTE: William Hiram Kirkland was born in Alabama to William Hiram Kirkland and his second wife, Prudence Bottoms. They migrated to Cherokee Co., Tx prior to 1850.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Rogers County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/rogers/rogers.htm
