Services for the Claremore Regional Airport operator will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, where he and his family have been active members since their move to the area. Burial will follow at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow, under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. McKenzie was born February 24, 1948, in Fullerton, Calif., the son of Carl O. and Olga Warch McKenzie. His passion for flying emerged at an early age. His father had been a B17 bombadier during the war and his father's best friend, David, was a pilot who was shot down before his birth. McKenzie earned his pilot's license even before he got his driver's license. After graduation from Fullerton Union High School in 1966, he attended Fullerton State College and then Westmont College. He served in the California, Texas and Oklahoma Air National Guards, flying A7's, F101's and other military aircraft. Though he was a fighter pilot for many years, he spent one year as aide- de-camp to the California Air National Guard Adjutant General in Sacramento. He retired as a major after 21 years of military service. He began a career with Continental Airlines after he had served in the Guard for several years. His experience in flying made him one of the companies most accomplished airline pilots, flying 727's, 737's and A 300 Airbus. He also worked in management for Continental and was an instructor in their training department. With the airline the past 25 years he was one of Continental's assistant chief pilots and at the same time he was managing the Claremore Regional Airport - a position he took on two years ago. A move from California to Houston provided David the opportunity to meet Sheri Feeley, a California native and Continental flight attendant. On Feb. 3, 1979 they were married in Laguna Hills, Calif. Houston was their home briefly before returning to California. McKenzie's career took the family many places through the years, but most recently between Oklahoma and Texas. Living in Rogers County was a family choice, McKenzie always said. Six years ago they moved to the rural community of Inola, developing a family ranch for much of the McKenzie family. Flying was more than a career for McKenzie. It was his favorite - maybe exclusive - hobby. When not in the air, he made time for his priorities of being a devoted son, husband and father, and friend to everyone he met. Survivors are his wife, Sheri, and children Jennifer and Carl, all of the home in Inola; mother, Olga McKenzie of Broken Arrow; sister, Diane Haspell of Inola; aunt, Joanne Bullmaster of Broken Arrow; niece and nephew, J.C. and Calynn Haspell, both of Inola; mother and father-in- law, Bob and Alice Russell; and brothers-in-law, Ron, Jim and Mike Feeley. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl O. McKenzie. ************************************************************************* We thank the Claremore Progess Newspaper for allowing us to post these obits on the Rogers Co., OK USGenwebpages http://www.claremoreprogress.com/ *************************************************************************
