(Bill) Payne William E. (Bill) Payne of Claremore died June 3, 2002 at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa after a lengthy illness. He was 73. He was born on Feb. 2, 1929 to Harold and Alma (Ryman) Payne of Geuda Springs, Kan. He married Janice Dickson on Sept. 7, 1948 in Manhattan, Kan., and to this union three daughters were born: Vivian, Roberta and Beverly. Bill was active in sports, playing in high school and on community basketball teams for many years. He also played semi-pro baseball, including for a St. Louis Cardinal farm team. He was a ranch manager for purebred Hereford ranches for 15 years, including Faulkner Farms, Delaware, Oklahoma and McGuirk Hereford Ranch in Claremore. The entire family participated in stock shows and fairs with their own Herefords and Milking Shorthorns. In 1965, they were named an outstanding farm family by the Tulsa World. Bill worked for Meadow Gold dairies until his retirement in 1989. Since then, he was the school bus driver of Bus #4 for the Sequoyah Public Schools, north of Claremore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Payne and Alma (Ryman) Payne Nugen; and two brothers, Donald and Robert. He is survived by his wife Janice, of the home; daughters, Vivian and Pat Loving of Muskogee, Roberta Johnson of Chelsea, Beverly Eagle and her fiance, Ron Brown of Bixby; sisters, Judy and husband Fred Woods of Wichita, Kan., Wanda and husband Emanuel (Mani) Rameriz of Arlington, Texas, Joyce and husband Jim Ratcliff and Dorothy Stout, all of Arkansas City, Kan.; brother, Larry Payne of Arkansas City, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 8, 2002 in Olan Graham Fieldhouse at Sequoyah Schools. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City, Kan. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Wm. E. (Bill) Payne Sequoyah High School Marching Band Memorial Fund/Sequoyah Schools, 16441 S. 4180 Road, Claremore, OK 74017.
