He died April 6, 2007, in Eureka, California. Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served 1942 to 1946, he moved to Eureka where he lived and worked for 61 years. In August, 1946, he married Kathleen in Los Angeles, California, and brought her to Eureka where they began their life together. In 1950 he started his years of owning and operating Bucksport Sporting Goods. In the 1970's, his two sons, Alan and Greg joined him and they began a working team. He truly enjoyed his association with the many friends he had the pleasure of knowing over the years. He was a member of the Salvation Army for 70 years and served in different positions in the church. He enjoyed playing his trombone in different bands, especially during his wartime service in the Coast Guard. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Kathleen, and his two sons whom he loved dearly, Alan and his wife Judy of Eureka, and Greg and Ruthie Rice, also of Eureka, and his very special grandson, Scott, attending the University of Colorado, in Boulder, Colorado. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Lt. Col. Gene and Hazel Rice of Seattle, WA; a sister-in-law, Dolores Austin of Bend, OR; nephews and nieces, Steve Rice of Placerville, CA, Marv Rice of Seattle, WA, Sandie David of Santa Cruz, CA, Shari McCann of Mesa, AZ, Jeannine Hartt of AZ, and Glenn Austin of Bend, OR.
