Entombment will follow at Oakhaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1-6 p.m. Sunday. Earl died Wednesday, May 1 at the Claremore Veterans Center at the age of 78. The son of William Thomas and Lila Gill Somers was born June 8, 1923 in Hope, Ark., where he was raised and attended school. After military duty during World War II in the United States Navy, he worked at various occupations before moving to Kerrville, Texas, where he met and married Guillermina (Mina) Ibarra on March 30, 1959. He lived in Kerrville for more than 30 years and had numerous friends and church family there. Earl was retired early in his life with a physical disability. However, those who remember him, particularly from his church family, will remember him as the man who never met a stranger. Although he was blind, he was known for extending the greeting of a handshake first in most encounters with others. He taught himself Braille and became very adept at reading it. His special Bible took up many shelves at home, but he loved reading it and would carry a volume to church where he taught Sunday School from it. Earl's love for gospel music was extensive and his philosophy of life is perhaps best stated in the song "Give the World a Smile Each Day." His family remembers him best for his very quick wit, intelligence, his booming bass singing voice, his love for God and especially his very deep love and caring for them. He loved to laugh and make others laugh and had a smile for everyone he met. Earl and Mina moved to Claremore from Kerrville, Texas in 1991 to be closer to family. He became a resident of Claremore Veterans Center in 1993 and lived there until his death. Earl was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Mina of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Greg Dalrymple of Claremore; sisters, Naomi Shadle of Somerton, Ariz., Helen Ewing of Shreveport, La., and Betty Britton of Dallas, Texas. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Bible Society or the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation. ************************************************************************* We thank the Claremore Progess Newspaper for allowing us to post these obits on the Rogers Co., OK USGenwebpages http://www.claremoreprogress.com/ *************************************************************************
