Bates PHOENIX, Ariz. - Ray W. Bates, 85, died Monday, April 28, 2003, in Mesa. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Phoenix Memorial Mortuary in Phoenix, Ariz. Ray was born April 20, 1918, in Konowa, to Ben and Lillie Bates. He graduated from Konowa High School in 1935 before moving on to Oklahoma A & M, graduating with a bachelor of science and a master's degree in Soils in 1942 and 1943. Mr. Bates went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II, from 1944 to 1946, being honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Following his military service Ray and his wife, Bea, moved to Arizona in 1951. Together they traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. Ray worked for the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation for more than 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Jane; three sons and two daughters-in- law, Kenneth R. and Susan Bates, Roger W. Bates and Donald G. and Helen Bates; two sisters, Dorothea Coyle and Lucille Cloud; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
