Elliott FLOYD, N.M. - R.H. "Henry'' Elliott, 101, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, in Portales. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Third and Kilgore Church of Christ at Portales with Peter Dahlstrom and Chris Swinford officiating. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery by Wheeler Mortuary Inc. of Portales. Mr. Elliott was born in Milton, Tenn. He lived with his family in Ritaville before moving to Box, Okla., in 1905. In 1906 his family filed a land claim south of Tolar and moved there in 1907. He attended school at Tolar. They moved to Clovis and lived there for five years. At age 17, Mr. Elliott began working for the railroad. He then worked on the Hart Ranch from 1915 until 1916. He was a Navy veteran of World War I, stationed on a sub-chaser. After returning from the Navy in 1919, he married Goldie Porter at Portales. They farmed and raised milk cows. In 1956, they moved from the Mesa community to Floyd. He drove a school bus for five years before retiring at age 65. In his working career, he broke horses, was a blacksmith and a welder, repaired farm equipment and windmills, doctored cows and did mechanic work. He continued to blacksmith and weld for area farmers and ranchers for many years after his retirement. He was baptized in 1910 in the Mesa community and later helped establish the Church of Christ congregation at Floyd, where he was a member at the time of his death. For many years, he judged welding for the FFA Field Days and was an honorary member of the Floyd Chapter of FFA. He was chosen in 1976 as the Floyd Citizen of the Year and in 1978 as the Pioneer of the Year. His wife, Goldie, died in 1968. He married Nellie Haga in 1970 in Colorado. She died in 1995. He also was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Elliott, in 1995. Survivors include two sons, John Henry of Clovis and Tommy Elliott of Minneola, Kan.; nine daughters, Lois Cavasos of Moriarty, Irene Marshall, Alice Gossett, Burma Stark and Betty Gossett, all of Portales, Natalie Olmsted of Powell, Wyo., Joan Goyne of Lubbock, Texas, Rose Rector of Floyd and Mary Burch of Christianburg, Va.; four stepchildren, Ruth Sutherlin of Durango, Colo., and Faye McIntyre, Jerry Haga and Melvin Haga, all of Bayfield, Colo.; 51 grandchildren; 110 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; A great-greatgreat-grandchild; and four stepgrandchildren.
