Cunningham, office manager, locked the office and no one was on duty. Long distance calls through the Duncan telephone exchange were about normal despite the Western Union shutdown. 25 Years Ago: The Duncan City Council accepted a $143,136 grant from the Federal Aeronautics Administration for airport improvements during a special council session. The extension was to be a 50-foot-wide concrete taxiway to serve the private hangers and Halliburton hangar at the north end of the airport. 10 Years Ago: More than 30 area “celebrities” planned to bake cakes, from scratch, to be sold at auction to benefit The Power Shop. Some of those scheduled to slave over a hot mixer and fret about their caked falling when taking them to the oven included; Bill Black, Karl Jacobs, Sam Cartwright, Mark Jones, Gene Brown, Ben Herrington, Wayne Holden, Mike Grantham, Don Spivey, Gary Ledford, David Hammonds, Jim Frieda, Ron Ludwick, Carl Bowers, Delbert Morrison, Smokey Pierce, Ed Apple, Gene Christian, Larry David, John Stuart, Larry Lawler, Travis Morris, Gene Werner, Carl Wood, Ed Bailey, Doug Nix, Mike Nelson, Alvie Chasteen, Ron Hunter, John Brockman, Don Howland, Rick Buchannan, Bobby Richardson, Jim McNair, Bob Cross, Jeff Jones (the oilman) and Dr. Jeff Jones. Five Years Ago: Two preschool children, Clayton and Tyler Guest, were eating lunch at their home when a 25-year-old man kicked in the front door and pointed a .45-caliber Colt semi-automatic pistol at the children’s father, Zac Fennell. The Duncan police quickly rescued the children and apprehended a male suspect. One Year Ago: Seniors at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics honored their favorite teachers with a special recognition ceremony. Diane Battles of Duncan High School was honored by Arick Shao. Shao was to graduate from OSSM as a member of the school’s 10th graduating class. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
