Boyd Gunnison, secretary of the University of Oklahoma Alumni Association 25 Years Ago: Three members of the Duncan High School chapter of Future Farmers of America captured top honors at the annual FFA Parent-Member banquet held at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. Jeff Sanner, Curt Couch and Brent Bullard received special recognition among the other award winners. 10 Years Ago: The Duncan Garden Council flew a special American flag at Heritage Park thanks to a donation by Anna Mae Stark. The ceremonial flag had been used at the funeral of Mrs. Stark’s brother, Lt. Col. Edwin N. Smith. Five Years Ago: While Mike Howard changed bulbs in a 25-foot display his assistant Tony Smelser steadied the ladder. Howard and Smelser were in Duncan to help encourage greater participation in the Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Lighting the Trail” Christmas project. One Year Ago: Nearly 250 fourth- and fifth-graders from throughout southwest Oklahoma attended the Powwow on the Plains held at the Simmons Center. Atwater Onco of Elgin, an elder Kiowa historian, shared stories of the tribe with the fourth and fifth graders.
