Kovacs watched square dancing at the Elks ball room following his talk in the lodge’s basement dinning room. 25 Years Ago: The Duncan Community Concert Association membership campaign officially got under way as the campaign headquarters opened in the Chamber of Commerce building. The membership drive offered a program of five concerts for the 1977-78 season. 10 Years Ago: The official publication of the Duncan Centennial was being readied for print by the Booklet Committee of the Revenue Division chaired by Karen Ridley. Duncan natives had been interviewed and research was conducted in an attempt to present an accurate and entertaining account of the community’s history. Five Years Ago: Larry Clark, a newcomer to Duncan, believed he could provide numerous answers to why people would want to come to Duncan. The Duncan Convention and Tourism Community Advisory Council believed Clark could do it too. The panel selected him to serve as Duncan’s new director of Tourism and Convention. One Year Ago: Empire elementary students took a step back in time when they reenacted the first Oklahoma land run. The 43 fourth-grand students of Janice Dale and Ginger Giles staked their own claims on the school’s football field. The students also got a taste of frontier life thanks to Cookie Anderson and Tomi Weir, Anderson served red beans, cornbread and peach cobbler and Weir gave horse rides. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
