Rice, Duncan area manager for Public Service Company was awarded a 25-year service pine at a monthly employees meeting in the Public Service auditorium. E.E. Ehret, employee information director for the company, presented the pin. Rice joined Public Service Company as a storekeeper in Lawton. Hugh McVay, assistant Duncan area manager, received a 10-year service pin from Rice. 25 Years Ago: Employees from the Mid-State Traffic Control in Oklahoma City installed new traffic signals at the intersection of 12th and Main. The signals were obtained through joint efforts of the Oklahoma Highway department and the City of Duncan with the budget cost of $22,095. 10 Years Ago: After 68 years in the ministry, the Rev. Phil Wahl planned to retire as minister of visitation for the First United Methodist Church, but his hard-fought crusade against capital punishment would continue. Wahl, 85, had already received numerous awards of appreciation during his career and had opposed capital punishment since the age of 14. Five Years Ago: Marlow firefighters peered inside a 900-gallon propane truck, owned by Mangum Oil and Gas, that overturned, but did not have a leak, on Lake Humphries Road. The truck apparently ran off the road and then flipped over when the driver tried to compensate. Driver James Logan was transported to Duncan Regional Hospital with head injuries and was listed in good condition at the time. One Year Ago: Residents of Stephens County who were interested in Native American art had an opportunity to view first-hand some of the rarest, original art created by the Kiowa Five. “A Spirit of Discovery-Native American Treasures” is a traveling exhibit throughout southwestern Oklahoma. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
