Letters came to the department from the company addressed to the communications department chief, radio department chief, chief detective, probation officer and police chief. Chief Raymond Webb was given his and the others were filed in the wastebasket. 25 Years Ago: Western bronzes and paintings by Jim Miller of Wilson were featured in the Chisholm Trail Historical Museum in observation of Historic Preservation month. Miller knows his subjects and locales from having made an intense study of them from the saddle of a working cow pony. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the southwest. His sculptures and authentic western scenes in oils are in prominent collections over the United States. 10 Years Ago: As the miles wore on the torch bound for Oklahoma’s Special Olympics probably grew a little heavier in the hands of the carriers as the pounded the pavement between Comanche and Lawton. Just over 20 law officers and volunteers from the Stephens County area took turns carrying the torch from Comanche through Duncan and to Lawton. Others volunteered to drive vehicles, donate items and cheer on runners. Five Years Ago: Shelly Carter Prather of Nashville, a 1988 graduate of Comanche High School and professional cheerleader for Nashville Kats, was featured during two cheerleader routines when the Kats hosted the New York City Hawks in a pro-AFL game that was aired on ESPN. Ms. Prather is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Hartman of Duncan and Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Carter of Comanche. One Year Ago: National wrestling champion Michael Lightner returned home to the 2000-’01 All Sports Banquet for Marlow High School. Athletes stepped up for special recognition, applauded by Lightner — one of MHS’ all-time outstanding competitors — and a full crowd in the elementary cafeteria. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
