The short circuit burned insulation off the wiring and burned one secondary power line in two. 25 Years Ago: Duncan’s Brian Shaw defended his 1976 Oklahoma Track Coaches Association Meet of Champions title in the pole vault competition sponsored by the Oklahoma Journal in Oklahoma City. Shaw held the state record of 16-1/4 in the pole vault. 10 Years Ago: Duncan’s Carolyn Koch, a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympics trapshooting team, joined Postmaster Donnie Bain and postal employee Ron Abersoll, to promote what was to be the world’s largest postcard. Local residents could add their name to the post card and receive two replica postcards at the Duncan Post Office. Five Years Ago: State Sen. Carol Martin, R-Comanche, announced a special Chisholm Trail Anniversary art contest, with pictures depicting the history of the trail. The winning entries were featured in a special commemorative calendar available through the Tri-County Chisholm Trail Commission. One Year Ago: Sarah Smart, 11, of Duncan was the first all-youth team leader for Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, in the area. Sarah won a trip to Dallas in an essay contest sponsored by the Heartland Division of the ACS. She was one of three picked in the state of Oklahoma. The meetings gave ideas on how to hold fund raisers and get schools involved with raising money for the ACS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
