Watson. He had three eggs which weighed 12 ounces, one of them eight inches in circumference, another seven inches. The oversized production were believed from an Austria-white head. The 12 ounces for the three eggs compares with 18 to 20 ounces for a dozen normal size eggs. 25 Years Ago: Duncan and Stephens County shared in the spotlight when national honors came to Oklahoma for its black walnut tree planting program carried out on Arbor Day. The Oklahoma Association of Realtors, which sponsored the project, received then prestigious National Arbor Day Award for its Bicentennial tree planting program known as “Operation Squirrel.” 10 Years Ago: Pre-first students from both Lee and Twain schools pulled with all their might in a tug of war contest at Twain school. It was the second year that the two schools met for a “noncompetitive” competition. The meet was organized by teachers Ruby Murphy of Lee and Mary Leyrer of Mark Twain. Five Years Ago: In an on-going attempt to attract industry to Waurika, community members continued in their efforts to lure a private prison. Besides the private prison Jefferson County had also been working to expand the county jail. The expansion would have initially house up to 30 inmates for the state Department of Corrections. One Year Ago: Two Duncan artists, Don Perdue and Kay Smith, won awards in Walter’s 33rd annual Gallery on the Green arts and crafts show. Perdue won first place in the oil painting division and Smith took first place for stained glass. Both were oil painting students of Judy McCombs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
