Walter Welch of Duncan became Deputy Sheriff Welch when he took the loyalty oath required of Stephens County employees. Welch served as field deputy, operating from the sheriff’s office. He had been with the police department for three years. 25 Years Ago: Duncan firefighters inspected a small aircraft for possible gas leaks after the plane crashed at Halliburton Airport. Benny Fields of Duncan, owner and pilot of the plane, told police he was taking off when the landing gear of the craft collapsed, causing the plane to crash along side the runaway. Fields was not injured in the accident, two fire trucks, three Duncan police units and a Stephens County Sheriff’s department unit responded to the crash call. 10 Years Ago: The Duncan Banner won four first place honors and four other awards in the annual Carl Rogan awards contest sponsored by the Associated Press/Oklahoma News Executives. Sports Editor Jeff Kaley won two first places for sports reporting and sports feature writing. Managing Editor Larry Gittings received tow first places for editorial writing and page one layout. Five Years Ago: The Claridy Creek Mall was sold. Bud McElhaney, who was to have closed on the purchase of the property said he planed to rename the shopping center “Chisholm Mall.” That was only one in a number of changes to transform the aging shopping center into a modern mall and hotel complex. One Year Ago: Jim Doerksen had his 28-hp ice cream machine on display at Orscheln’s Farm and Home Store. A two-cylinder gasoline engine drives a Deming pump that forces water across the paddles of a waterwheel. Gears turn a red shaft at it turns the crank on a 5-gallon ice cream maker. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
