Dave F. Babcock of Duncan was searching for a litter during a mortar barrage in which his unit figured in Korea. As he reached it, Babcock felt a slight tug at his sleeve. He glanced at it and found that a piece of shrapnel had ripped the jacket from his wrist to his elbow, without even scratching his arm. He had missed becoming a wounded man by a fraction of an inch. 25 Years Ago: “Peter Rabbit” came to visit the Comanche Elementary School kindergarten as part of a nutrition lesson taught by Carmelita Burnham, Comanche High School home economics teacher. Students sampled bits of fresh vegetables as Burnham placed paper vegetables in Peter’s basket. 10 Years Ago: Thirty-eight cyclists stayed close at the start of Waurika’s 40-mile Race-the-Lake. Another 31 opted for the shorter 18-mile course. It was the fourth year for the event the Chamber of Commerce sponsored. Five Years Ago: Dustin Bode and Jamie Bogle were the winners of “Outstanding Parish Youth” awards at the recent 21st annual Archdiocesan Catholic Youth Rally at St. Gregory’s College in Shawnee. Bogle was a junior at Duncan High School and is the daughter of Frank and Cece Bogle. Bode was a sophomore at Duncan High School and is the son of J.W. and Lura Bode. One Year Ago: City employee Butch Cheeves upgraded the 24 holding cages at the city animal shelter. He replaced the old hurricane fence doors that some animals were able to chew or squeeze through with doors of his own design. Cheeves said the cost of the upgrade would be about $1,000, mostly for materials. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
