Clint Hopkins, manager of the eating place, discovered the theft in the morning. He said the large number of coins and 16 $1 bills were hidden under beer bottles in a case in the drive-in building. 25 Years Ago: Duncan’s population edged up one-half percent between 1970 and 1975, while that of Stephens County rose 6.1 percent during the same period, according to estimates and projections released by the U.S. Census. The federal statistics showed Duncan’s population at 19,823, up from 19,718, and the county’s at 38,096. 10 Years Ago: Duncan tennis star Bau Tran received the DHS Booster Club’s Hall of Fame Student/Athlete Scholarship plaque from club President Jan McCormick during the All-Sports banquet. Tran was one-half of the varsity No. 2 doubles tennis tandem. Five Years Ago: Children lined up to dig in the dirt, not as archaeologists digging into the past, but as students digging for their future. Comanche Public Schools held the groundbreaking for its new elementary school that was to house all students in grades K-5 from Comanche, Liberty and Meridian. Children brought spoons and bags to participate in the event and to take dirt home with them as mementos. One Year Ago: After winning a new bicycle, Ashley Law, 11, posed with Duncan Breakfast Optimist Club President Leroy Taylor and Bicycle Safety Committee Chairman Bill Rice. The bike was the Optimists’ top prize in their annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo at the Stephens County Courthouse. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
