J.L. Lloyd, manager of the collection, said some 1,000 cards had been left at homes were pollsters had called and found no one in the house. The cards asked for information to be published in the directory and, said Lloyd, “almost all of them have been turned in within a few days.” 25 Years Ago: Wheat harvest had already started for some area farmers, including Jack Bethany Jr. of Duncan. The Bethanys began harvesting southeast of Duncan and delivered between 800 and 900 bushels to Stockman’s Supply. 10 Years Ago: Laura Womack, 41, was presented a plaque by Sandy Garrett, state superintendent of public instruction, and Al Underwood, state director of Lifelong Learning, during a recognition ceremony at the state Capitol. Womack was honored for scoring higher than 9,107 other Oklahomans taking the General Education Development tests. Five Years Ago: Eight Union Pacific freight cars rested on their side after a small tornado tossed them over northeast of Old U.S. 81 and Terry Road. In Duncan, the storm sirems went off at 6:10 p.m. The thunderstorm left .69 of an inch in The Banner’s rain gauge. Hail was also reported, most of it small, a marble size. One Year Ago: Motorcyclist Dustin Hampton calibrated his speedometer against a Stalker Radar trailer parked alongside Country Club Road. Police Chief Ronnie Ward said the machine was on loan to Duncan for a week for evaluation. “We really want to see how many applications it would have for our community,” he said of the $12,000 device. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
