A group of local Legionnaires headed by James Gentry, placed miniature United States flags on the graves of area men killed while serving in the armed forces. 25 Years Ago: Animals, the type one find on a farm, are the main attraction at the Chisholm Trail District Cub Day Camp at Camp Winkler east of Duncan. Rickey Kelley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kelley, gave an admiring pat on the head to Elsie the cow while other youngsters at the camp tried their hand at milking her. 10 Years Ago: Barbara Bowden wiped a tear from her eye as she passed by the coffin of "Mr. Ray Zor" following services. Bobby Goodner gave the eulogy. Ray Zor was put to rest following the Mayor's proclamation that Duncan men were forbidden to shave without a license, part of the Centennial promotion. Five Years Ago: Duncan's 1996 offensive linemen were honored at the '97 All-Sports Banquet at the KRHD "Offensive Players of the Year." Along with coach Charles Lynch and line coach Bill Patterson were Joe Elrod, Chad Blackburn, Dustin Schreiner, Anthony Mack and Rocky Mitchell. One Year Ago: Seniors in Denise Thompson's English class at Velma-Alma worked furiously the last few days of school to complete their final English project, one that would have lasting memories. For the second year the seniors created memory books as gifts to their parents on graduation night. The seniors had to write 14 chapters on their own lives. Each book had to include the author's memories and thoughts spanning their entire young lives. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
