Frank Grayson of Holdenville called on Reps. James C. Nance of Purcell and J.D. McCarty of Oklahoma City to take themselves out of the speaker race to preserve harmony in the 1953 session of the state legislature. 25 Years Ago: Grady County’s Southwest Rush Springs field got another deep test with An-Son Corp. planning to drill 18,750 feet into the Springer. An-Son’s deep test in Grady was the No. 1 Pendley. 10 Years Ago: Eighty-six students from Empire school were awarded with a free fun day at Fuqua Park and 15 large pizzas. They read at least 1,000 books during the school year. Julie Weedn and her 9-year-old son, Travis, got their picture taken while signing up for parts in the production “Passageway of Progress,” a centennial history presentation about Duncan. Five Years Ago: Chris Pack and Orlando Avalos chipped away cracked plaster at the Duncan Post Office. Postmaster Donnie Bain said the plaster was deteriorating and falling from the building, and he did not want anyone injured. The fix was temporary. The post pffice’s district facilities office and the National Historic Registry were working on plans for permanent repairs. One Year Ago: Telephone customers in the Duncan area were cut off from the rest of the world for several hours after a cable was cut in the Central High area.
