The unopened packages were from people throughout the country, including celebrities Bing Crosby, Loretta Young and Kathleen Norris. 25 Years Ago: A tank truck owned by Elliot Truck Lines of Vinita missed the curve on U.S. 81 coming out of Marlow, slid down a small embankment and came to a rest on the No. 2 fairway of Al and Em’s Gold Course about 3 a.m. The truck driver, identified as Dutch Baughter of Vinita, was taken to Talley-Walker Hospital for treatment of undetermined injuries. The truck was carrying 42,300 pounds of anhydrous ammonia. 10 Years Ago: One of Halliburton’s amphibian aircraft, the Grumman Goose, was to be on display at Chicago’s Air Classics Museum. The airplane, built in the early ‘40s, was used by the oil company to fly crews to offshore sites in the Gulf of Mexico. Five Years Ago: Going to jail for a good cause were a number of area citizens, including Tom McCasland and his daughter, Meredith. Guilty of charges such as overeating and taking candy from a baby, those participating in the American Heart Association’s “Cardiac Arrest” event at Duncan Public Library raised $4,400 to help fund lifesaving research, community programs and public education about cardiovascular diseases and stroke. One Year Ago: Mary Head of Velma received a new Browning shotgun, a fund- raising prize, from Sgt. Tommy Edwards, Stephens County Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy, and Sheriff Jimmy Bruner.
