During the first five days it was in operation, Manager C.H. Smith Jr. estimated some 2,000 persons had used the pool. The opening day found about 500 patrons dodging the heat by donning a bathing suit and enjoying the cool water. 25 Years Ago: Model airplane, an air flight map and books and magazines on airplanes were used by Mrs. Alda Kinney, a private pilot, when she presented a story hour program at the Duncan Public Library. Members of the Beta Zeta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society presented a variety of programs for the summertime story hours. 10 Years Ago: The Reinecke family seemed to be prepared for the continuing rain —they had mounted an outboard motor onto their pickup truck. Actually, the pickup was a handy place to park the motor while the family was repairing their boat. Five Years Ago: Jim Clary and J.B. Howle clearly were enjoying themselves as they were robbed at gunpoint outside the old First National Bank building in Duncan. The Old West showdown was performed for the benefit of a bus tour brought to Duncan by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation as part of the 130th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Chisholm Trail. One Year Ago: Austin Smith, 5, made his move against Samuel Henderson, 6, while Clayton Penny, 7, watched them play checkers in Marlow. A four-week summer Youth Council program at Marlow Middle School annually features arts and crafts, swimming safety, makeovers, soccer classes, bike safety and more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
