At the door, he met store owner Herb Strachan, looking a bit startled and trying to shut off the alarm he had tripped accidentally. 25 Years Ago: The Youth Citizenship Seminar at the American Citizenship Center of Oklahoma Christian College attracted five Duncan High School students. Mark McCasland, Greg Lowe, Clay Scott, Ann Ruback and Susan Brown visited with Dr. Walter Judd, former U.S. congressman, writer and lecturer on world affairs. The Duncan teens were among 110 student leaders selected to attend the four-day seminar. 10 Years Ago: Duncan Middle School student Sam Stevens, son of Rick and Cindy Stevens, showed off the trophy he won in his division at the National Youth Sports Partner’s “3-Point Shooting Contest” in Healdton. He set a record for the Junior High Division, when he nailed 22 baskets in two minutes of shooting from beyond the 3-point range. Five Years Ago: Toni Rodgers, 10, daughter of Russell and Denise Rodgers, took a break after designing a hot air balloon panel during the Sooner Flying Academy at Halliburton Field. She and the 15 other young people enrolled in the one-week summer program assembled the panels and flew the completed balloons. One Year Ago: A former Army C-47 cargo plane, converted to civilian markings, refueled at Halliburton Field. Local pilot Floyd Wininger said, “Frontier Airlines used to fly these (the commercial version DC-3) into Duncan. I’d watch them fly in all the time.” The big plane, owned by Miami Valley Aviation of Roxboro, N.C., was built in 1942 and was one of only 300 C-47s still flying. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
