Reid, were among 50 state elementary and secondary school instructors attending a guidance and counseling workshop at the University of Oklahoma. 25 Years Ago: The calendar finally caught up with the weather: Summer arrived. The arrival of the new season found Duncan consuming water during June at a rate likely to exceed that of the previous August, the peak usage month of 1976. City firemen were casting anxious eyes skyward hoping for moisture, as the hot, dry weather daily increased the danger of an outbreak of grass fires. 10 Years Ago: Disc jockey Larry Culberson showed youngsters a new dance step during the Juneteenth celebration in Douglas Park. Five Years Ago: It wasn’t Camelot that arose on the hillside overlooking Clear Creek Lake; it was the Barony of the Eldren Hills, a part of the Kingdom of Ansteorra. The 19th annual gathering of the barony had ladies, knights, kings and jesters who camped and fought “to the honor and glory of chivalry.” Approximately 350 members of the barony, from as far away as Kansas, Mississippi and Texas, spent the weekend in period costumes. One Year Ago: Helen Schiefer Kuhn was crowned Founder’s Day Queen at a special ceremony at the Antique Marketplace and Team Room in downtown Duncan. Gov. Frank Keating proclaimed the day as Helen Kuhn Day. Mayor Dennis Johnson also issued a proclamation for the day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
