Head-on Collision Kills Five Sunday Grady County more than contributed its part in helping Oklahoma set a new 24 hour death record over the weekend. One Rush Springs man and four from Marlow were killed in a head-on collision 2-1/2 miles south of Rush Springs Sunday at 7:15 which accounted for nearly one-half of the 13 killed throughout the state. Killed from Rush Springs was Willie Wilmon, 28 who was headed north by himself in his car which hit a car driven by Roy Hobbs of Marlow head-on. Killed in addition to Mr. Hobbs were Mrs. Roy Hobbs and their two grandchildren; Junior McDaniel and Larry McDaniel all of Marlow. One other grandchild was riding in the car and was seriously injured. Another Chickasha man, Billy Warren Stephenson, 23 was killed and County Judge Charlie Collins was injured in an accident early Monday morning at Blanchard. Stephenson was driving Judge Collins' car when it collided with a car driven by Fred Grossnicklaus of Blanchard, who received serious injuries and is in a hospital in critical condition. Wiley Ballard received two broken legs when his car went out of control and crashed into a ditch Sunday morning. Ballard failed to right his car after making the turn and went into the ditch in front of Alva Tims hog barn. An accident on Monday three miles east of Tuttle brought the total county killed on Grady roads to 10 for the year. Six of the total occurred in a 24 hour period over the weekend. Just a little over a year ago on August 10, 1956 four persons were killed in a headon collision two miles north of Rush Springs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Stephens County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/stephens/stephens.htm
